The Silent Patient

A few days ago, during my surgical rotation, we encountered a deaf and mute couple who had come seeking help. The wife had been a victim of assault, and this brought a unique challenge as my fellow interns and I struggled to communicate with them due to their lack of formal education. Despite the initial hurdles, with the support of those around us, we managed to ensure that the police registered their case. Following that, I immersed myself in my department duties.

However, what happened next was truly touching. The couple returned after a while, not for medical reasons, but simply to bid us farewell. They took the time to individually express their gratitude to every person present in the room. It was a heartwarming gesture that left me fighting back tears. Despite their meager circumstances, they radiated a genuine happiness and kindness that was incredibly humbling.

Recently, the husband returned to the hospital, and though our initial attempts at communication were awkward and immature due to our inexperience with sign language, there was something about his warmth that drew us in. As we persevered with our clumsy attempts at body language, he unexpectedly paid us a compliment. He pointed at my friend and me, then pointed to his own head and finally gave us the "thumbs up" sign. It made us feel truly appreciated and valued, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts.
